Laser eye surgery is a kind of medical procedure that makes use of a laser to treat several kinds of eye diseases and conditions such as myopia, astigmatism or hypermetropia. In the past, there was no definite cure for these kinds of eye conditions but with this new technology, people with these problems are given hope of having normal sight again. This laser surgery, also known as the laser corneal sculpting surgery works by reshaping the surface of the eye and putting it back into its normal form. The first ever medical procedure was made 20 years ago and is still considered to be one of the most highly demanded eye surgical procedures up until present.
So how does laser eye surgery work? The surgery procedure focuses on the cornea, the structure of the eye that is responsible for focus. Using laser beams, microscopic amounts of tissue will be removed until the eye is reshaped back to normal function. As the outer layers of the cornea are removed, the inner layers are also reshaped in the process. Once this is corrected, patients that have undergone the surgery can have their normal eyesight restored without having to use glasses or contact lenses.
