James Esbester, of Portsmouth, became lost for five days in forest on the island after he was left "virtually blind" when he took out his contact lenses.
The 30-year-old then fell around 30 feet and injured his arm in the incident in Kahurangi National Park.
"When I set out for what was supposed to be a day's walk, I was wearing contact lenses, but I had to take them out on the second day," he informed a news conference.
After his rescue, he revealed that trekking through the thick undergrowth was made difficult by his poor eyesight, which meant that his vision only extended about two feet in front of him.
