Nearsightedness, or myopia, occurs when a person has difficulty seeing objects at a distance. Glasses, contact lenses or LASIK surgery may help remedy the condition.
The College of Optometrists in Vision Development offers suggestions that may help reduce or prevent myopia:
Use good posture when reading -- sit up straight, and don’t cause strain on your eyes by holding the book too close or too far away. Make sure there is always proper lighting when reading or working. Be sure to take frequent breaks and rest your eyes when reading or working on a computer, or any other activity that may strain your eyes. If you do notice yourself squinting or having difficulty seeing objects at a distance, talk to your eye care professional.
